Effective Leadership

The Situation:

As a mid-level executive leading major client projects, you’re often joined by more senior colleagues. And despite owning the strategy and execution, it’s easy to feel overshadowed by their titles.

So how do you shift your mindset and your presence to become a trusted advisor in the eyes of your clients?

1. How do I overcome the feeling that I’m less critical in meetings when senior leaders are present?

2. How do I demonstrate my value so clients don’t underestimate my impact based on title alone?

The Answer:

1. Mindset Shifts to Become the Trusted Advisor

Your title doesn’t define your impact. Your confidence and clarity do.

Before any client engagement, try these affirmations:

  • I can help them.

  • We are going to be great partners.

  • This conversation is significant.

  • I am not defined by my role, but by my goal.

  • They want to talk to me.

These simple thoughts rewire how you show up in energy, tone, and presence.

2. Behaviors That Build Executive Presence

Your behavior tells the client where to place their attention. Lead with these actions:

  • Kick off the conversation or toast

  • Initiate greetings and introductions

  • Come prepared with something interesting about each attendee

  • Focus your attention on the client, not internal colleagues

  • Use strong eye contact and make rounds at the end

  • Stand periodically to take space and signal leadership

These micro-moments build credibility and shift perception, regardless of your title.
