You’ve got a big moment coming up. A pitch. A town hall. A keynote.
And your number one fear?
Sounding robotic. Or worse. Forgetting your words.
It’s a common myth that preparation ruins spontaneity. The opposite is true.
The more you rehearse with intention, the more natural you sound.
Here’s how to prepare for your next high-stakes talk without sounding like you’re reading a teleprompter.
1. Frame the Talk Like a Story - Not a Script
Don’t write a script word-for-word. Build your message like a story arc instead:
Opening Hook: Grab attention with a question, insight, or moment of tension.
Problem → Solution: Walk them through the dilemma and what to do about it.
Call to Action: End with what you want the audience to do or feel next.
Tip: Write down your key message in one sentence. If your talk had no slides, what’s the one thing you want remembered?
2. Practice Out Loud (Yes, Out Loud)
Reading it in your head doesn’t count.
Speak your talk out loud, multiple times.
Notice where you trip up or ramble. That’s where clarity is missing.
Refine your transitions so the talk flows from one idea to the next.
When it sounds natural to say, it will sound natural to hear.
3. Rehearse in Layers
Don’t rehearse the same way every time. Instead, rehearse like a pro, one layer at a time:
Round 1: Focus on content and flow
Round 2: Add vocal variety and pauses
Round 3: Stand and rehearse with body language
Round 4: Simulate pressure (timer, lights, even a colleague watching)
This helps you build muscle memory and stay calm, even under stress.
4. Get Real Feedback
You can’t self-diagnose tone or delivery. You need another set of eyes and ears.
Ask a trusted colleague to watch and give specific feedback.
Better yet, rehearse with a coach who can tighten your message and sharpen your delivery.
At Speak by Design University, we help you refine your talk in real time, so your message lands with clarity and confidence.
You don’t need to memorize a speech. You need to own your message.
When your purpose is clear, your ideas are structured, and your voice is practiced, you won’t sound scripted.
You’ll sound like a leader.
